My Fathers Hat

He doesn't mind my Momma says
as he arrives one more time today
A single mom who couldn't go on, anyway

Without the love and the support
From the man she loves the most
Wearing my father's hat
He's there through thick and thin

No matter where I'll go
Or no matter where I've been
It doesn't seem to matter anything to him

When my father's working hard
Sweatin' in the yard
He wears this tired, old, and ugly blue hat

Although it's so full of holes
Been mended many times before
My mother knows that
She can't change my father's hat

Oh - she knows better than that
She won't change my father's hat
Too many miles on it are still left to go

Working hands that slip it on
Mom's right there all along
Together, building me up so strong

Then I thank the Lord
For the love that has forged
My father's hat

Thank you mom and dad
For all the good times that we've had
And all the many more that are still yet to come

I know the last few years were tough
At times they took their toll on us
Always you both were there for me to lean upon

Whenever the weeds would grow too tall
And the pool turned swampy green Mom always
Sends you Dad to come rescue me

Words and melodies are not enough
To show you both, just how much
You both mean, to this family

Then I thank the Lord
For the love that has forged
My father's hat - that used to be mine.
